how is it even humanly possible to memorize constantly changing positions on three different boards simultaneously whilst strategizing his own moves for each individual board exclusively, enough so to beat 3 different people with no handicaps at all, and do it in under 9, or more realistically, 3-6 minutes. I cannot even begin to fathom how his brain works. i doubt i could memorize past 4 or 5 moves on a single board, without having to worry about a time limit, much less this shit.

Is this game fair? I mean for the 3 chess players! At first blush, it seems like Magnus is facing overwhelming odds but I think the parameters were set superficially to look overwhelming and dazzling but they really weren't. These games were set up for Magnus to win. All the chess players are amateurs chess players so he doesn't have to really ponder on any of the boards. All the moves consists of popular openings, attacks, and defense. These are things that Magnus can easily beat blindfolded because he's seen them over and over again. You put one GM mixed in there, this house of cards crumble. I am speculating here but it's possible that these three could have even beat him if they all moved fast while doing unconventional moves. Then, there was no way that Magnus could have memorized all 3 boards at the same time. Every brain has at most few working memory "spots" which are converted to short-term memory. They could have overwhelmed him together by moving 6 moves really fast, he would have forgotten what he did in move 1 because his brain wouldn't have had time to convert the move into short-term memory because the working memory "spot" would have been replaced with another move before it had time to convert it. But since they were taking so much time, he had time to memorize the boards as they made their moves...

+Bjørn Robert Unhjem First, take your word as a national junior chess champion that visualizing is NOT memorization. Uh...what does your chess experience have anything to do with knowledge about visualization and memorization? Those are issues of psychology, not chess. 🤣. Second, I think you're being a little too sensitive here. I neither stated nor implied that I thought highly of myself. I simply explained how memory works on a basic level and you think that I'm bragging or something. Just because someone can teach you something, you shouldn't be so sensitive about it. Wow. You're telling me that disregard all current scientific knowledge we have about how the brain works and memory. Instead, I should listen to you. Ok...

+RandomThoughts Again, you do not know what you are talkong about. Take my word as a national junior chess champion, visualizing IS NOT memorization. This is a good example. http://youtu.be/ku-s4TMllL8 He is VISUALIZING and CALCULATING difficult puzzles that he have never seen before. Stop thinking so highly off yourself, god damn that's disgusting. "Shows lack of intelligence" watch the linked video, piss off and don't bother me again.

RandomThoughts

+Bjørn Robert Unhjem First, I think you should put more considerations into your writing before you accuse someone of not knowing that he's talking about. It's suggests a lack of intelligence. Second, I admit I don't play chess but I actually have a background in psychology so a significant part of what I did say was knowledge. I do admit that I don't play chess so I don't know how hard it is to memorize a chess board but I'm speculating that it's not that tough since he does this as his job. Did you know that there are people who can memorize hundreds of numbers at once? Look it up. Did you also know that each person only has 3-4 working memory "slots". That means that they can't think of more than 4 "things" at once. So, how do these people and Magnus do it? They actually do this by visualizing the numbers as one drawing so it fits into only one memory "slot". And that is what Magnus is doing here. As you said, he's visualizing the board so it fits into one memory slot. But once, you start adding different possible branches they have to consider, they won't be able to do it, unless they have it already in their short-term to long-term memory. It's physiologically impossible for the human brain. No brain in the entire world can do this. Our brain is not even close to being able to do this. We can't even do long multiplication with large numbers in our head. People who multiply two big numbers in their head do not do so by using long multiplication but using "tricks" to get to the answer. These are all facts, not opinion as you stated. But, here comes my speculation. I'm speculating that he's actually seen similar scenarios in his brain so he already knows what move he has to do. That's why he makes his move immediately and doesn't even ponder possible traps and permutations. If he has to start "thinking", his memory will start to falter immediately. Each permutation he has to consider will take up a precious working memory slot. So, even if you put a single master level player into the mix, I'm speculating he won't be able to do it. Then, he'll have to stop and start considering permutations of scenarios which he's never seen before and he'll actually have to "think". That is why I said that this challenge is set up so that it dazzles. Like you said, he could have gone up against 10 people blindfolded and it wouldn't have mattered because they are all amateurs. They always do the "average" move. So, it's something he's already seen and can quickly come up with the appropriate move. But, put someone in the challenge in which he actually has to ponder for more than 10 seconds, then he won't be able to do it. He'll start forgetting the other boards. Moreover, I speculate that other grandmasters can do the same thing that Magnus is doing.

Keeping track of the three boards is actually pretty easy to do. Go ahead and try it, just don't look at the video and try to keep track of the three games, you'll find it's very doable. Granted we're only keeping track of it not actually also thinking about making and countering moves at the same time.

They should use NATO code for calling out the board positions - Alpha6, Bravo2, Knight takes Bishop on Echo5, and so on. Also the announcer should save White's time by simply calling out the board number - just the number - and the move, instead of 'on board 3, black played [move] which takes way longer to say. And make time announcements only when requested by White (the blindfold player) since everyone else can see their time remaining and their opponent's.
